from the AAI Brian Gregan qualifies for World Juniors – PB’s in abundance

KitKat Leinster Schools’ Track & Field 2008
“Exciting days’ athletics in Santry.” John Shields.

And more….. Day 1 of the KitKat Leinster Schools’ Track & Field Championships threw up its usual mixture of exciting performances on a day when the wind played a major part in proceedings. Right from the beginning an easterly breeze made competing against it an ordeal. Although it was with the sprinters in the home straight it made anything more than 200m extremely difficult. Nevertheless we had four very good records and a host of personal bests.

Despite this the performance of the day came from Brian Gregan, St Mark’s CS Tallaght, who powered his way around the 400m in an incredible 47.49 secs. This easily beat the record of David McCarthy and gave Brian the qualifying time for the World Junior Championships in July. Brian is certainly an athlete to look out for this summer.

Another athlete on his way to Poland for those World Juniors is Barry Pender, Knockbeg College, who cleared 2.10m in winning the Senior Boys’ High Jump in a record breaking performance.

Tara Jameson, Dominican College Wicklow, has been in outstanding form throughout the cross country season and today switched that form to the track. She ran 10.15.26 in poor conditions to set a new mark in the Intermediate Girls’ 3,000m. Her schoolmate Donna Carolan was the first record-breaker of the day in the Senior Girls’ Walk when winning in 14.55.1.

A fine double in the Senior Girls’ Hammer and Shot was recorded by Aoife Hickey, Loreto Kilkenny. She threw an excellent 48.24m in the hammer and 12.31m in the shot. Another Kilkenny girl, Ciara Everard from Presentation, was a double winner in the Senior Girls’ 400m and 800m. On the track Michael Hynes, St Fintan’s, had his double in the Senior Boys’ sprints.

Other outstanding performances came from Killian Barry, Belvedere, in the Intermediate Boys’ Hammer when he threw 59.93m. Ian Rogers, De La Salle Raheny, jumped 4.20m in the Senior Pole Vault. At the very end of the day Tomas Cotter, St Mary’s Dundalk, showed that he is an emerging athlete with a powerful win in the Senior Boys’ 1,500m.

We look forward with great anticipation to next Wednesday when Day 2 of the KitKat Leinster Schools’ Championships takes place.

The balmy sunshine at the KitKat Munster schools track and field championships at the University of Limerick track at Plassy was just what the doctor ordered to bring out the best in everyone.
Both Niamh Whelan and Kalyn Sheehan set qualifying standards for the World Junior championships at the Munster junior event two weeks ago and again dipped under the standards when comfortably winning their respective events.
Niamh won the senior 100m and 200m, and her 100m time of 11.94 was again inside the World standard. Kalyn won the 400m hurdles in 60.55 which was a new schools record. She also won the 100m hurdles.
Chris Russell was the third Waterford athlete to record a double, taking the senior 100m and 200m in style.
Closest finish of the day was in the intermediate boys 100m hurdles. Here Patrick Maher and Edmond O’Halloran continued a sequence of races where just one hundredth of a second separated them. Everything they did in the race they did it together. Even the camera created doubts about which of them was ahead at the finish. Eventually Patrick was declared the winner, with both athletes given the same time, which indicates that there was less than one hundredth of a second between them on this occasion.
Craig Murphy took over the lead with 700m remaining in the senior boys 1,500m and kicked again with 300m to go. He stayed on to win but had to survive the persistent challenge of Kevin Cooper who came within a whisker of the winner.
Claire Fitzgerald set two new throws records when winning the intermediate shot with 12.34 and the discus with 42.11. She also won the javelin.
Rachel Birdthistle set a new record in the intermediate girls 300m with a time of 41.66, and Dean Cronin’s strong front running tactics paid off with a record in the junior boys 800m of 2:01.14.
