By John Desmond The first race in the Ballycotton 5 mile Summer series kicked off last night in Ballyandreen in East Cork on what was a lovely Summers evening. What a difference 24 hours makes because on the previous evening, the weather was awful, cold and wet. Yet again, Ballycotton Running Promotions had everything organised to perfection, even the weather! How do they do it??? As for the race, they managed to attract a record crowd of 279 runners which is some going for a race that has been going for 25 plus years. The previous record was set 25 years ago back in 1983 when there were 271 finishers. Back then, 84 runners broke the 30 minute mark. Last night, just 20 runners got under. Reasons for the change??? People have less time?…More people just running to stay fit rather than to compete in races?…More sports to choose from?
