from A.A.I website The final leg of the 3 County schools XC league was held on Nov 27 in St Laurence O’Tooles grounds in Carlow.
This leg of the series was held in an innovative cross country relay format in contrast to the regular races that were held in previous rounds. This led to a lot of exciting battles between the teams and provided great entertainment for the spectators. Many of the overall league competitions were very close coming into the last round and this led to the relay deciding the overall winners. There were a couple of instances where final leg runners were involved in thrilling finishes with their rivals with the prize being overall victory.
There were a number of good performances throughout the league with many athletes including Danny Lawlor, Brian Kelly, Rachel Smyth, Stephen Attride, Vivien Fleischer, Graham Power and Niall Delahunt all running strongly. A total of 19 schools participated this year and it was great to see a number of new schools entering for the first time. A large number of athletes were introduced to the sport and it’s hoped that many of these will be involved in the schools championships which start after Christmas.
A lot of credit must go to the people who organised and hosted the events this year. Knockbeg College, Newbridge College and St Laurence O’Tooles had their courses in excellent condition and ensured that the events proceeded in a flawless manner. Well done to all who participated.
