Back to Portugal

https://www.paulhession.co/blogs.html I’m back out in Monte Gordo, this time with the Irish team. This is a camp I’ve gone on for the last few years and it’s always gone pretty well as a build up to the start of the season. We came out a week ago expecting sunshine, and were greeted by torrential rain! It didn’t last too long though so we’ve been able to get some great sessions in the heat.

It makes such a difference, and you can take your time and focus on more quality and more technical training. I’ve had a nice mixture in my training so far, but all of it has been that little bit quicker than I’ve been doing the last few weeks. The season is coming fast so I need to up my game!

Unfortunately Nick is not out with me so I’ve been doing some sessions on my own. I did get a session in with Irish 400m runner, Brian Murphy, which was a nice change from the norm.  Yesterday I did my first proper bend runs so far this yeat. I only had a couple of runs at the end of a session but it was good to get back to more event-specific stuff. The bend for me can be hit and miss sometimes but, when I nail it, it can be really good. It was a bit rusty but it went fine considering I haven’t done that stuff in a while.

Camps like this are great because we have the support of the Irish medical staff. This means physio and massage on tap every day if needed. It’s especially useful out here because I’m going through a transition pace-wise. I find when things get quicker that is when the body is most vulnerable. So, after a fast session on the track there is nothing better than heading down to Kyle for a rub. After my back injury a few months back I’ve been a bit more careful about not letting things build-up because I don’t want anything like that happening again. Thankfully the back has been good, and I’m back lifting heavy weights.

I’m trying to see what races I’m going to do in the early part of the season. The season for me this year is really late, as the heats of the 200m at the Worlds aren’t until September 2nd. This means I’ve got to be careful and not get carried away too early. I’ll probably open in early June and target the Euro Team Champs in Izmir as my first ‘proper’ 200m. We’ll see though. Getting lanes in races is always an issue and the politics involved can be hard to predict. Hopefully once July comes around I’ll be able to get into the races I want. There is the small matter of World and Olympic qualifying to deal with!

Anyway, I had a rest day today, which was nice. I’m not sure if my tired legs would have hacked another day! I’m off down the road to watch the Man Utd/Chelsea game.  There are quite a few Man U supporters plus some ABUs in the camp so might be a bit of a laugh.
