Is your training waning? Are you short on motivation? Here’s one very good reason to keep the mileage up this autumn:

The Donadea Forest 10k working group are proud to announce the 5th Donadea Forest 10k run. To date the run has raised over €50,000 and donations have been given to a variety of local charities, the Donadea Running Club and Tìr Na Mona, the local community group. This year members from Donadea Running Club, Volunteers from Tìr Na Mona and helpers from Enable Ireland are joining forces to ensure we continue the success of the previous years! We are delighted to be running the event in aid of Enable Ireland this year. It provides free services for over 3,800 children and adults with disabilities in Ireland. In Kildare alone there are 180 families availing for the services. One such family is Lorraine and Eoin Redmond whose son Aaron has been attending Enable Ireland Naas, since he was 1 year old. “Aaron, who is like any other 7 year old boy – extremely active” says Lorraine, was born with Neurofibromatosis(otherwise known as NF1). NF1 is a genetic disorder caused by mutation of genes on chromosome 17. It affects 1 in every 2,500 people and is equally common in both sexes, of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
One year ago Aaron had to undergo a below the knee amputation in order to better his quality of life. He received his prosthetic leg 3 weeks ago and he hasn’t looked back since. “It really has given him his childhood back, says Lorraine and, without the services that Enable Ireland has been providing Aaron, he simply wouldn’t be living his day to day life as he is now”.

For the children themselves it’s about being accepted for who they are, despite their given disability. It’s about being given the chance at independence, and having access to services that will help them develop the skills necessary to lead full and rich lives and be included in their communities. It’s about focusing therefore on the person and not just on the disability.

Funding is always a going concern and now more than ever there is a growing need to help maintain and sustain the high standard and level of services that Enable Ireland provides to the families.
