Winter League progress

0

from Munster Express We have seven competitive weeks under the belts in this year’s SuperValu Winter League. It is great to see many of the 2.5k athletes moving up to the full 5k event after only a couple of weeks at the shorter distance. This year there is no competitive 2.5k, so we do encourage as many to register for the 5k as possible. Last Tuesday the first league table of the year was published. All runners can chart their progress over weeks which follow.

The early league leader is Cian Power, who has really shown great improvement and consistency over the first eight weeks. Cian has improved by almost five minutes for the 5k, going from 26:31 on week 1 to 21:35 on his fastest week. It is still early days and Cian won’t have it all his own way, as a number of runners including Matt Greene, Dermot Cunningham, Elaine Walsh and Michael Glascott are all in close attention.

Tuesday, December 9th, will be our last league before Christmas and will be our traditional Charity Mass start event, with all runners off at 7pm sharp.

New members are welcome each week. Entry fee is €2 if you are a member of an athletics club, and €5 if you are a non-member. All runners can avail of the cheaper entry rate by joining the club today! Details available at registration each week.

The league takes place at Kildalton College, Piltown with registration from 6.30pm each Tuesday and first runner of at 7pm sharp. There is only one prerequisite for every runner: all athletes MUST wear a high-viz vest! Any runner without a vest will not be allowed start, so please save yourself and the organisers unnecessary embarrassment by wearing a reflective vest. It is for all of our safety. Runners must also wear the same number each week.

Thanks to our sponsors SuperValu, Carrick-on-Suir, and to Kildalton College, Piltown, for their continued support of the Winter League.

GOAL Mile

Christmas Day 2007 saw the inaugural GOAL Mile in Carrick. Thanks to Mags and Bobby Power, with the help of club members this event was a great success, and because of the generosity of local people a grand total of over €7,000 was raised for this very worthy cause.

The GOAL Mile will again take place this Christmas Day at 11am from the Ormonde Castle. It finishes on the Main Street. This is a great, energetic way to kick off your Christmas and raise vitally needed funds for charity in the process. All are welcome. There is no upper or lower age limit; you don’t have to be a club member; in fact, you don’t even have to be a runner! As you can walk, jog, or crawl; whatever mode gets you through the distance! Come along and enjoy the fun; more details on the GOAL Mile will be available over the coming weeks.

Club Membership

The 2009 annual club membership is now due for both new and existing members. For a mere €30 you can join one of the fastest growing clubs in the area and enjoy all the benefits that membership has to offer. Registration forms are available each Tuesday night at the SuperValu Winter League, or alternatively contact club registrar Barbara Cooke or any committee member.

Christmas Party Night

Our annual club Christmas party will be held in the Carrig Hotel on Friday, December 12th. Tickets are available now at the Winter League or from any committee member and cost just €5. Don’t miss it!
