NI & Ulster Uneven Age Group and Novice Results – Leinster Intermediate and Juvenile

Over 1700 athletes experienced sunshine, excellent courses and brilliant competition which were the hallmarks of two days of the Leinster cross country championships held in the grounds of Avondale House, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow and Heywood College, Ballinakill, Co. Laois over the past two weeks.

Slí Cualann’s Brian Farrell was untouchable in the Men’s Novice while Ger Clancy (DMP) followed up on his summer road race victories by breaking away from a group of three on the final lap to take the Intermediate Men’s title. Colm Burke (St Abbans) also continued his winning ways in taking the Master’s title.

The Novice and Intermediate Ladies events were dominated by the much improved Fiona Kehoe from Kilmore AC, who led from gun to tape in both events while Helen Leonard (Raheny Shamrocks) had a much closer victory in the Masters event.

Other two time winners included

Elizabeth Carr (Mullingar Harriers) who won at Under 13 & Under 14

Mary Mulhare (North Laois) who won at Under 15 & Under 16,

Shane Fitzsimons (Mullingar Harriers) who won at Under13 & Under 14

Shane Boggs (Mullingar Harriers) who was outstanding at Under17 & Under 18.

Athletics Leinster extends thanks to the Wicklow and Laois County Boards, Slí Cualann and St. Abbans clubs for the top class staging of the two events.

The committee would also like to remind all eligible athletes who are interested in running for the province in either the Stormont Cross Country or Scottish Indoor Championships to register their application as soon as possible. Full details and application forms are available on https://www.athleticsleinster.com.

Results from Tilburg, US, England, Cork

Forty seven athletes represented Ireland at the annual Tilburg cross country meet today.

Brendan O’Neill was in top form as he stormed to a 23 second victory in the junior race.

At under 23 level there was another exciting performance from Cathal Dennehy who won with 23 seconds to spare, while Francis NicRiamoin had 17 seconds to spare as she was an easy winner of the women’s under 23 event.

Charlotte and Rebecca Ffrench O’Carroll finished second and third respectively in the junior women’s race.

Fionnuala Britton was third in the senior women’s race, while Mark Christie led the Irish home in sixth place in the senior men’s race.

Across the Atlantic it was Regional cross country day with big Irish interest. Andrew Ledwith was fifth in the New England contest with a time of 30:05, with junior David McCarthy the first Freshman, 15th in 30:20.
Laura Huet was best of the Irish in the women’s race, 17th in 21:17.

Another junior, Ciaran O’Lionaird, was 27th in the Great Lakes Regional with a time of 31:42 over a very tough course.

At home there was a great tussle in the men’s intermediate race at the Munster championships in Carraig na bhFear. By the end of the first lap it was Colm Turner setting the pace up front, with Rory Chesser on his shoulder as they simply raced away from the rest of the field.

Chesser took over the lead on on the third lap and stayed there for the lap, with Turner obviously taking a break from his front running exploits.

With two laps to go Turner was back in front and this time there was no looking back as he opened a winning lead. Chesser tried hard to close but could only manage to keep the gap the same as the Limerick man powered his way to victory.

Afterwards Turner paid tribute to his DCU running partner Cathal Dennehy, who, he said, was in considerably better shape than himself!!
