Woodie’s DIY AAI Juvenile Indoor Track & Field Championships

The first day of the Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor championships produced some tremendous contests in both track and field events. Even though the start of the outdoor season is just weeks away, support for the indoor championships was huge.

The obvious joy of victory was shown on the faces of many as they crossed the line. Keith Maher tried to lead all the way in the under 19 1,500m but was passed on the last lap by Sam Kelly. However, the Thurles Crokes man rallied and regained the lead and won in style. Last year he was second in both 800m and 1,500m and was clearly delighted with his win.

The final of the boys under 19 400m was a terrific affair with little separating the top three. In the end it was Fergal Ellis from Ballinamore, a club better known for its race walkers, who was the strongest as he crossed the line just ahead. Ellis is better known for his 800m exploits.

Dara Kervick was an impressive winner of the under 18 400m, while Ciara Everard impressed in the under 19 girls 400m.

Tara Jameson could not have been more impressive in winning the under 18 1,500m, leading from gun to tape.

Nathan Jege recorded one of the fastest times of the day in winning the under 17 60m, a fraction ahead of Mark Kavanagh. The fastest time went to Craig Lynch who won the under 19 60m in 7.01.

Niamh Whelan clocked 7.78 in winning the under 19 60m, the same time as Joan Healy who won the under 17 60m. Eilish Fitzpatrck was a good winner of the under 18 60m.

Woodie’s DIY AAI Juvenile Indoor Track & Field Championships
Day 2 of the Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor Championships proved every bit as entertaining as Day 1. Records are there to be broken and Sandra Lawlor continued the trend with a smashing win in the under 19 60m hurdles. She was foot perfect as she glided over the hurdles and in winning she eclipsed Grainne Redmond’s 1996 record with a clocking of 8.71.

Ann O’Shea set new marks in the under 14 long jump and her winning effort of 5.34m was better than 5.18m set by Leona Byrne in 1997.

Edmond O’Halloran won the under 17 60m hurdles in 8.56, just one hundredth faster than his Leevale clubmate Patrick Maher in second.

The same time difference separated Conor McCrossan from Paul Doherty in the under 19 60m hurdles. Doherty didn’t help his cause by hitting the last hurdle with both athletes in the air together.

Fearghus Hannon was in a class of his own in winning the under 18 60m hurdles in 8.19, as was Sarah Levin in the under 15 60m, winning in 9.09.

Just one hundredth separated Chloe Fahy from Louise Harvey in the under 16 60m hurdles with Fahy winning in 9.21.

The under 18 1,500m was a thrilling affair as Paul Robinson got the better of Ryan Monaghan after an epic duel. Their case was helped in no small way by Darren McBrearty who fell twice during the race, eventually finishing third with one shoe missing.

Beccy Wall was another in record breaking form, winning the under 14 shot with a best of 12.09m.

Liam Markham was a comfortable winner of the under 17 1,500m as was Dean Cronin in the under 16 1,500m
