from Triathlon Ireland website UPDATED WITH SPERRIN DUATHLON RACE REPORT Last weekend there were three duathlons being held around the country, with Sperrin Duathlon in Cookstown Co Tyrone, another in Limerick and the third in Naas Co Kildare.

All three of these duathlons held their first race earlier this year and all were surrounded by snow. But with the snow long behind us (we hope!), all races got off to a dry start.

Limerick Duathlon – race 2

With all the snow and ice that had to be cleared for first race it was hard to believe that was only 2 weeks previous. With perfect conditions and a field of 100 competitors. The 2nd duathlon of the series was all good to go!!

In the mens race, Keith Ryan (Limerick Tri) came in first off the first run followed by Mike O’Brien (Limerick Tri) and Niall Collins (Limerick Tri). Collins came in first on the bike followed closely by O’Brien and Alan Kenny (3d Tri) Collins had a fast transition and led O’Brien and Kenny out onto the final run. He kept this lead and Niall Collins finished 1st with Mike O’Brien 2nd and Alan Kenny 3rd.

In the Ladies race Eilis Connery (Belpark Tri) lead after the first run followed by Tara Whyte and Aoife Nash (Predator Tri). Whyte caught Connery on the bike and maintained this lead and Tara Whyte finished 1st with Eilis Connery 2nd and Aoife Nash in 3rd position.

The final race of the series is due to take place Sunday, March 29th at St Edna’s. With all the prizes to play for, it should make for a great race!!

Thanks to the Referee Helen Whyte and Technical delegate Eamonn Horgan who did a fantastic job. A big thanks to everybody who turned up Saturday afternoon to set up the bike park. Thanks to all the marshals who gave up their time to help out on Sunday. Thanks to the Gardia. And last but not least a big thanks to our fantastic time keeper Willie Carey.

Sperrins Duathlon

Sperrins Duathlon saw another sunny Saturday outside Cookstown with 67 athletes taking to the start line of the second race. The race went off in time and 1st back to T1 was Gary Crossan with the fastest run of the day being chased by Sean McFadden, closely followed by Sperrins Harrier Donal Gallagher. The women’s race saw Anne Paul taking the lead into T1 followed by Kay Hack and again another Sperrins Harrier Cheryl Cardwell. These three remained in these positions to the finish line. Meanwhile in the men’s race things saw a switch with Sean McFadden taking the lead only a few miles into the bike section where he went to take the win and setting the new course record. He was followed closely by Gary Crossan in 2nd place who is new to Duathlons. In 3rd place was Jonathan Dempsy, who also set the fastest bike split of the day. Next race is on the 14th March which is the final of the series.
