Ray Darcy “Join SPAR & Ray for 5k” Runireland team led by High performance Coach Sebastien Locteau were in Waterford today for the first leg of the “Join SPAR & Ray for 5k” with over 700 participants

The series of 5km runs are held everyday this week respectively from Monday in Waterford, Cork, Mullingar, Galway and finishing in Dublin on Friday. The event is sponsored by SPAR, Today FM, RunIreland, the AAI, local clubs, and Red Tag Timing.

Early mornings are never a problem for coaches, but leaving Galway with a small trailer for Waterford, with a full finishing event kit is a bit out of the ordinary. Everyday this week, participants will turn up to receive their technical "I ran with Ray" tshirt and will take to the start of a relaxed and enjoyable 5km run, in the "SPAR & Ray 5K" series.

As a french native speaker, I couldn’t possibly describe how amazing the atmosphere was and how it possibly made 700 people forget about the wind, cold and rain.

It just did !!!!

The music selected by Ray D’Arcy for the occasion was pumping up the atmosphere. Ray was taking pictures with the public and signing autographs. It is interesting how you see the popularity of somone like Ray with the general public when a coach, like me, is only tied up with specific sport people which you usually see on a regular basis.Only a few people were asking for my picture or signature but it still feels good to be a face people recognise sometimes.

Frank Greally from the Irish Runner was also a supporter of the event and the support of the AAI is an essential component of this project’s success. Waterford AC had a fantastic set up to cope with the numbers, and the event went smoothly as it should under the direction of Deirdre. With a finish on the superb Waterford track, some athletes ran a lap of the track to finish under the finish gantry. Every finisher received a goody bag, fruit and water.

Today we are in Cork starting at 1pm…… see you there
