Upcoming Leinster Cross Country in Avondale

0

from Munster Express Next Sunday the first stage of the Leinster Juvenile cross country championships takes place in the scenic Avondale, Co Wicklow. In all St Senans will have 25 juvenile athletes competing as well as a Masters team. This includes three teams in girls U/12, U/16 and boys U/12 and following good performances at county level they should give a good account of themselves.

We also expect some strong individual performances as athletes like Hugh Morgan, Bronagh Kearns and Conor Rochford are all capable of high placed finishes. Our masters team includes recent Berlin marathoners PJ Dwyer and Sean Caulfield with Nicholas Halley and Bill Lacey also listed to run.

Our esteemed bus driver Pat Duggan will be departing the Sports Complex at 8.00am with the usual pit stops along the way. The full squad is as follows:

WLR FM Run For Life

Over 500 hardy souls braved the high
winds and chilly rain in the first WLR FM Run For Life 10 mile road race last Sunday.

The event, which expects to raise over €200,000 for local cancer charities set off from the WLR Centre at 12.00am and followed a route along Inner Ring Road, Tramore Road and City centre before finishing back at the
starting point. St Senans had PJ Dwyer and Andy Dollard in action and PJ was well placed tracking the early pacemakers and showing no signs of his recent marathon efforts in Berlin. He was 3rd for most of the race and finished as 1st O/50 and 6th overall.

Andy also had a good run and seems to
have recovered well from his ordeal in
Germany. Berlin on the other hand is on
high alert in case the Irish contingent ever returns.

The First Noel

It’s almost that time again, when the streets of Dublin are taken over by a colourful throng of marathon runners all seeking the perfect race. Its many moons since the first run back in 1980, when Dick Hooper of Raheny Shamrocks took top honours in a time of 2.16.14.

Among the runners that day was 800m star Noel Carroll, the man who had the initial inspiration for the event and persuaded both the BHAA and Dublin Corporation to get involved. Born in Annagassen, County Louth, he won three European Indoor Championships at 800 metres, held the European 800 yards record, was a member of the Villanova team that broke the world record at 4x 800 metres, won 14 national titles and represented Ireland at the Olympics in 1964 and 1968. In all 2,100
runners started that day and some 1,420 finished. I was among a group that did for a short while run beside the great man himself along the side of Stephen’s Green.

This year the Noel Carroll trophy will be presented to the race winner by his widow Deirdre O’Callaghan, while his children
Enda, Nicola, Noel Jnr and Stephen Carroll will all be taking part to raise money for the Noel Carroll Building in Calcutta.

The building is a craft training centre for young girls and boys and helps get them off the streets of Calcutta. Noel was PRO of Dublin Corporation from 1972-1996, Chairman of Goal and Chief Executive of Dublin Chamber of Commerce 1996 until his sudden death, while out running.

Over the years the Dublin Marathon has grown to the level where now 10,000 runners from all parts of the globe take part and last year saw a world class time of 2:09:07 by Russian athlete Aleksey Sokolov.

No doubt Noel would be well proud of its development over the years. Best of luck to all the local athletes taking part this year.
