0
Tomás Mac an t-Saoir’  is taking on a Cycle through Africa in aid of the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation, he will set off on November 2nd to cover 10 countries, 3 deserts and a hefty list of mountain ranges.
He plans to cycle from Cairo, Egypt, down to Cape Town, South Africa. 12,000km over every sort of road and terrain imaginable. Solo & unsupported. ‘It’ll just me my bike and I!’
The Route
Tomas’s Africa cycle will take him through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. Passing through the Sahara, Kalahari and Namib Deserts, the Simian Mountains in Ethiopia, Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Malwai and the Victoria Falls.
Speaking about his upcoming two-wheeled adventure ‘All I’ll have is my bike, spare clothes, tent, bike parts, electronics (such as a GPS so my folks know where I’ll be), food and water. Africa is easily the hardest continent to cycle, due to physical challenges & geopolitical challenges.  But no doubt that it will be an epic trip with some great stories! I expect the cycle to take me 6-8 months.’
The cycle is in aid of the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Donal appeared on the Brendan O’Connor show and captured the hearts of the country. After his death his parents set up the foundation in his memory and primarily in order to promote his anti-suicide #Livelife message. The foundation also assists in other causes of providing age-appropriate teenage facilities in hospital and hospice care centres. To date, Tomas has raised just over €8,000  for the Donal Walsh Foundation & if anyone would like to donate you can do so at www.idonate.ie/cyclingafrica, any and all donations are greatly appreciated!
