John Buckley Sports/Munster 10 mile Spring Classic Series. Also 10 km walk @ 1:30pm

The Kilnaboy 10 mile road race is the 4th and final race in the Munster 10 mile ‘Classic’ series. It is usually held on the 2nd Sunday of April every year.

It is one of the oldest 10 mile road races in the country, outside of Ballycotton. The slightly undulating circuit through the Burren poses a fair but tough challenge, and is also an ideal opportunity to enjoy a early season break.
The history of the Race…

“The race originally started when a group of Kilnaboy AC athletes had organized a trip to do the Ballycotton 10 which the club did for all the early years of that race. We had a 52 seater bus on those occasions and it was always full. This was more a social outing by the Club than anything else as there may have only been 10 or so runners on the Bus with the rest along for the trip and some great fun was had by all. On the way home on one of these early trips, someone suggested “why don’t we hold a road race of our own” and we could do it in memory of the late Michael (sonny) Murphy from Ballycashen Kilnaboy who had represented Ireland at the 1932 Olympics. From there it has grown and 2008 will be the 24th year of the race. We missed just one year due to the ‘Foot and Mouth’ crisis when the local farmers asked us not to go ahead. At the moment, we plan to produce a booklet with all of the results for each year for our 25th in 2009……Vincent McCarthy, Kilnaboy AC”
