Derval O’Rourke’s fifth place finish in the semi-final of the women’s 100 metres hurdles semi-final was her second time to set a season’s best performance at the Games was not enough for her to advance to the final later this evening.

Gold medal favourite Sally Pearson of Australia skimmed low over the hurdles in the second of three semi- finals to finish fast in 12.39 seconds and O’Rourke equalled the time she had run in the qualifying heat to place fifth.

The Leevale athlete started well but admitted that that her middle hurdles were not as strong as she would have wished. “The middle hurdles were not good enough and I needed to be stronger in the middle,”O’Rourke said. “It’s nothing more dramatic than that. I have been sprinting quiet well on the flay and maybe I am struggling a bit to convert it to the hurdles. I still think it’s two season’s bests in two days and I could not run sub 13 seconds three weeks ago. It would have been a nice fairy tale ending to be in the final as it was the only championship that I had some unfinished business with. I still think that I have represented myself relatively well.”

O’Rourke was immediately thinking ahead as she left the Mixed Zone. “I want to win an European Indoors and I wish that was on tomorrow,” she said.

Dawn Harper of the USA won the first semi final in 12.46 seconds and Kellie Wells (USA) won the third semi-final in 12.51.
