from the Athletics Association of Ireland 1. The Irish Schools’ Athletic Association and Athletics Ireland are promoting a joint venture to give teenagers the opportunity to involve themselves in recreational running or walking as a healthy form of exercise. The emphasis is on participation. We would like to have as many as possible taking part.
2. It is proposed to run a “School Mile Challenge”. The event will be run by the school on a school day or over a number of days and would involve setting up a measured mile course, either a single lap or a number of laps. The school would have to set up the course and steward the event. It is proposed to hold it in December and January. Each school will chose its own date or dates
3. The pupils would be encouraged to take part where each pupil would be timed over the mile and rewarded with a coloured coded wrist band. Coloured coded bands will be made available in 10 mins, 9 mins, 8 mins, 7 mins, 6 mins and 5 min categories. The purpose is to promote running as a fitness activity. The pupils may run or walk the course. It is anticipated that we will have a follow up “Mile Challenge” to be held next year.
4. A spreadsheet will be provided to fill up and return. We will require the name, age and time of each participant. We will then send the wrist bands and be able to let each school have details like fastest school, fastest age or age group, fastest province, fastest county, fastest individuals etc.
5. In order to defray costs there will be a charge of €30 per school. We will provide each school with the paper work, a poster and the wrist bands.
6. If you wish to participate in this venture please fill out the attached application form and return to the address below with a cheque for €30 made payable to The Irish Schools’ Athletic Association.
