Cork Cross Country Championships

Alan O’Shea, winner of the Cork City Marathon on the June bank holiday weekend, claimed his first Cork senior cross country title today at Carraig na bhFear. O’Shea, second to Brian McMahon last year, was in no mood for hanging around when the gun went, and built up a commanding lead by the end of the first of five laps that stretched well over 100m.

Behind him last season’s AAI intermediate champion James McCarthy was leading the chase together with Leevale’s Cathal Lombard. A lap later Lombard was on his own in second as he set about breaking down O’Shea’s lead.

Going out the last lap Lombard cut O’Shea’s lead to four seconds and a thrilling finish looked in store. However, O’Shea got down to work again and stretched away to win by sixteen seconds to join an elite group of athletes to win Cork senior titles.

This was Lombard’s first Cork cross country outing in over three years that included a ban for a positive EPO test, and, it has to be said, he was warmly welcomed back by the Cork athletic community.

Carmel Crowley from Bandon took off from the start of the women’s race like a ’scalded cat’ and never looked in danger of being caught, with Carmel Parnell from Leevale running on strongly for second ahead of clubmate Claire McCarthy.

Numbers taking part in the junior races were most disappointing with Michelle Finn from Duhallow and Shane Coffey easily winning their respective titles.

Health Service Executive 4 Mile Road Race – November 4th 2007
“On behalf of the H. S. E. Athletic Club, I wish to thank all those who contributed to making our annual Road Race such an outstanding success.
We had over 270 runners take to the road, which is a record for this event.
Our thanks go to the Lee Rowing Club for the use of their facilities, the Gardai, Ambulance crew and all the stewards who assisted in any way.
I wish to acknowledge the support of the hard working Cork B.H.A.A. committee, without whom it would not be possible to stage such an event.
I also wish to say a special word of thanks to the Health Promotion Department of the Health Service Executive for sponsoring the event.
Thanks also to Unilever Ireland Ltd. and McCarthys Sportsworld (Glanmire) for their generous support.
Finally, I wish to thank all the athletes who participated, in what was a very successful event, on a pleasant Sunday morning.
This year’s event marked our Twenty Fifth Anniversary and we were very pleased to see a number of those who participated in the first event, staged on the Lee Road in 1982, still taking part.
We look forward to your continued support.”
Michael Murphy (Secretary)
