Collagen can iron out more than just wrinkles Every day we are bombarded with adverts for anti-wrinkle products, each one containing something more impressive than its predecessor. Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids, Hydroxyproline, Retinyl Palmitate, Boslowox, Peptides, Q-10. What??? It’s like being back in chemistry class at school.

And I was never very good at chemistry – sorry Mr Stevenson! I know you tried your best but every week I would burn the bottom out of yet another test tube or the experiment would go totally wrong in some bizarre way. There really wasn’t much potential for you to work magic with.

The good news is that collagen – a favourite in anti-wrinkle products – has another, more important benefit in the body. Research from the University of Munich and Stanford University has found that collagen reduced pain and increased mobility in more than 75 percent of their 2,000 research subjects with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. After three months, research subjects were able to reduce their usual pain-relieving medication significantly.

Collagen is a protein found naturally in the body. The problem comes when, as we age, collagen levels decline. Over the age of 25 we will lose 1.5 percent of collagen every year. By the age of 40 we will have lost 30 percent of our collagen levels.

Collagen is a necessary building block for healthy joints but it’s not as simple as rubbing your face cream into your sore knees. You’ll have to take collagen in Collagen Hydrolysate form and that doesn’t come cheap – about 30 pounds / 35 euros for one month’s supply.

However, if you have a family history of osteoarthritis and are starting to feel the effects yourself, it may well be worth your while considering collagen supplements along with an active lifestyle. More than 8 million people in the UK have osteoarthritis and the majority of these people will rely on anti-inflammatory medicines which can damage the linings of the stomach and intestines. The research subjects reported few side effects from taking collagen supplements.

Olympic Athletes use collagen to speed their recovery from injuries and to restore joint health. All in all, collagen is proving to be much more beneficial to the body than just smoothing out a few facial lines.
