Relay teams competing for Olympic qualification

RTE News The Irish women’s 4x400m relay team will be in action on Friday in Turin as they begin their quest to qualify for this summer’s Beijing Olympics. The team, which was announced by Athletics Ireland, consists of Michelle Carey, Karen Shinkins, Brona Furlong and Marian Andrews.

The notable absentee from the team is Irish record holder Joanne Cuddihy, who is currently out of action with a knee injury but she should return to the fold for the European Cup on June 21st in PorThe Irish team will have to break the Irish record of 3.34.61 if they are to give themselves any chance of making the top 16 in the world and secure a place in Beijing.

Two other Irish athletes will also be in action in Turin tomorrow night. Deirdre Ryan will look to continue her return to form in the High Jump, while Thomas Chamney will compete in the 800m.

The men’s relay team was also named as they go in search of Olympic qualification on the 14 June in Belgium.

The team will be led by European Indoor Champion, David Gillick, and he is joined on the team by Paul McKee, Gordon Kennedy and Brian Doyle with teenage sensation Brian Gregan from Tallaght AC, the travelling reserve.
