PRESS RELEASE Shane Quinn of Ferrybank AC has secured the Silver medal in the 3000m at the European Youth Olympics in Tampere, Finland. The Waterford boy gave a gutsy performance and was in a state of exhaustion after the race, taking over twenty minutes to get back on his feet. Great Britain’s Callum Hawkins was a clear winner in 8.23.62 minutes, with Quinn recording 8.30.12 minutes and Russia’s Il’gizar Safiulin claiming third in 8.32.53 minutes. Catriona Farrell of Craughwell AC and Joan Healy of Bandon AC were just outside the medals by the smallest of margins, both finished fourth in their events. Farrell produced a personal best leap of 1.79m in the high jump; 1.82m was good enough for bronze. Healy ran 11.90 seconds in the 100m final, just 5 hundredths of a second off making the podium.

Leevale’s Edmond O’Halloran placed a credible 13th overall in the 110m hurdles heats and was just off his personal best time with 14.31 seconds. Ciaran Dolan of St. Michael’s College jumped 6.20m and will not progress to the final.
