Press Release Launching the Womens Mini Marathon Galway are TG4’s Gemma Ni Chionnaith, Roisin Ni Thomain & Sinead Ni Loideain. Galway Simon Community has just launched a brand new West of Ireland Women’s Mini Marathon to mark their 30th Anniversary of providing accommodation and support to people who are homeless.

This event is also being used to highlight the fact that homelessness is a problem which is on the increase and doesn’t just happen to men. In fact, 30% of the people in Galway Simon Communities housing projects are women, ranging in age from early 20s to mid 80s. In addition almost 400 women and 300 children visited the Galway Simon Community Day Centre in the last 12 months.

We are urging women (or even men in drag) of all ages to join in with us by walking, running or jogging the 10K distance.

The Mini Marathon will start at 11.30am on Sunday 28h June 2009 and will from SouthPark at the Claddagh, Galway City. It will provide a great opportunity for all participants to enjoy the camaraderie and fitness benefits of such an event on their own doorstep. This is a perfect event for those who were either unable to make it to the national event in Dublin or who wish to re-live the experiences of that day.

Galway Simon Community are also co-hosting this event with both Midlands Simon Community and Mid West Simon Community in order to maximise the number of people who are homeless that will be supported from this event. In total between these three Communities participants of this event will be directly helping people from 10 counties, a huge achievement from one event.

However, all monies raised in an area will be used in that area, so for example if you live in Galway, Mayo or Roscommon, all monies raised for this event will go directly towards the accommodation and services provided by Galway Simon Community, however if you live in Laois, Longford, Offaly, or Westmeath, funds will go directly to Midland Simon Community.

The entry fee is €20 and each participant will receive a race medal and T-Shirt. If you or someone you know is interested in taking part in this event, then please register online at www.galwaysimon.ie as soon as possible as places are limited.
