
The National Athletics Awards in association with Woodie’s DIY and Tipperary Crystal will take place on Saturday 17th of November in the Clyde Court Hotel. The awards ceremony is a celebration of the many successes of our athletes during 2012. It also commemorates our exceptional volunteer base.

The nominations for Track and Field Athlete of the Year are; Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers AC) who finished 6th in the 400m at the European Championships, Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC)-4th in the 10,000m at the European Championships, Mark English (Letterkenny AC) – 5th in the 800m at the World Junior Championships and Jessie Barr (Ferrybank AC) – 8th in 400m hurdles at the European Championships.
Endurance Athlete of the Year nominations includes Joe Sweeney (Dundrum South Dublin) for his 5th place in the European Cross Country Championships, Olympic Marathon representatives Linda Byrne (Dundrum South Dublin AC) and Mark Kenneally (Clonliffe Harriers AC) and Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) for her winning performance at the European Cross Country Championships.
The Race Walker of the Year nominations include Robert Heffernan (Togher AC) for his fourth place finish and new Irish record in the 50km race walk at the Olympic Games, Laura Reynolds (Mohill AC)-20th in the Olympic 20km race walk, Olive Loughnane (Loughrea AC)-13th in the Olympic 20km race walk and Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny AC) for his 29th place in the Olympic 50km race walk.
The athletes nominated in the Junior Athlete of the Year category are Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (DSD AC)-semi-finalist in the 800m at the World Junior Championships, Mark English (Letterkenny AC)- 5th in the 800m at the World Junior Championships, Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC)-semi-finalist in the 100m hurdles at the World Junior Championships and Ben Kiely (Ferrybank AC)-semi-finalist in the 400m hurdles at the World Junior Championships.
For the first time the Club of the Year Award will be divided into two separate awards this year. The performance club of the year award will be based on athletic performance and the nominees include Clonliffe Harriers AC, Leevale AC, Dundrum South Dublin AC and Crusaders AC. The Development Club of the Year award will recognise a club’s efforts based on significant development programmes within the club. St Lawrence O’Toole AC, Lifford AC and Templemore AC have all been shortlisted for this award.
The Inspirational Performance Awards Nominees are; Joe Sweeney (D.S.D AC) for his 5th place in the European Cross Country Championships, Steven Colvert (Crusaders AC) – for his wind assisted 20.40 (+3.0) 200m time at the Woodie’s DIY National Track and Field Championships. Anita Fitzgibbon (D.S.D AC) for breaking the Irish record in the Javelin with a throw of 52.97m and Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers AC) for setting a personal best in the heat’s of the 400m at the European Championships.
The nominations for Coach of the Year are Teresa McDaid (Letterkenny AC), John Shields (Clonliffe Harriers AC), Drew and Hayley Harrison (Emerald AC) and John Coghlan (Crusaders AC).
The Athletes of the Year, Outstanding Official Award, Ultra Running Award, Mountain Running Award, Master Athlete of the Year, Aviva Tailteann Schools Boy and Girl Athlete of the Year, Special Recognition and Lifetime Achievement Awards will be announced on the night.
Finally all athletes who broke Junior, U23 or Senior Irish records in 2012 will be honoured on the night.
The format of evening will be a black tie gala dinner with a live band to round the evening’s entertainment off after the presentation of awards. 2012 has been a very exciting year for Irish Athletics and we hope you will join us in celebrating those successes.
