from Chantal Gibney Ireland’s Olympian Melanie Nocher has finished in 9th place today in the final of the Women’s 200m backstroke, at the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Nocher, who recorded a time of 2.05.78 in her heat swim this morning, advanced to the final as the number 7 seed. Her final swim time of 2.06.70 was just over one second slower than her best ever time, which she set in December last year.

There were two new Irish records set earlier today in Istanbul; Grainne Murphy clocked a 4.45.58 in the 400m Individual Medley, lowering the previous Irish Junior record time set by Sycerika McMahon by over 6 seconds.

The Irish Men’s 4x50m freestyle team relay recorded a new Irish Senior record time of 1.30.26 earlier today in the heats. The relay quartet of Conor Leaney, Steven McQuillan, Donal O’Neill and Michael Dawson finished in 13th place overall.

Commenting on the overall week’s performances in Istanbul Swim Ireland’s National Performance Director and Lead Coach for the Championships Peter Banks said “Overall we’ve had good performances from the Irish team and I’m pleased with the number of new National records set. We still have work to do in order to be making semi-finals and finals though and especially at this calibre of event – and we will work hard to get to that point.”
