from Munster Express Popular Waterford AC athlete and coach Gavin Kennedy has taken up a new position as assistant coach at the prestigious Iona College, Rochelle, New York. Gavin was both a top performer and coach at the DePaul University in Chicago, where he coached Jakub Kolacz to the top national junior 10K time in 2007. During his time as an undergraduate at DePaul, Gavin served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and also on the DePaul University Captains’ Council. He broke the two oldest records in DePaul history in the indoor mile and outdoor 1,500 meters and for his efforts was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the men’s indoor track team in both 2004 and 2005. He was also a successful coach at Northwestern University.

Having competed in both Conference USA and the Big East as well as coaching in the Big 10 and Atlantic 10, Gavin brings a wide range of experience to his new appointment. He will be working with head coach Ricardo Santos, who is delighted to have the young Waterford man as part of his new team. No doubt Gavin will be keeping a close eye on the upcoming talent around this area to maintain the strong Irish tradition within the college. Gavin earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from DePaul in 2006 and will pursue a Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration at Iona. The son of Tina and Larry Kennedy, Gavin currently resides in the Bronx. We would like to wish Gavin every success in his new position and look forward to seeing him back on home soil soon.
