Ryan and Mooney win mountain running inter-counties Cork won the senior men’s inter-county race from Dublin and Wexford. Brian McMahon led home the Clonliffe team and was supported by Niall Duncan and Kevin Keane. Dublin won the women’s race from Cork with Donna Mahon, Mags Greenan and Orla Loftus the scoring trio. The recent torrential rains and a heavy mist forced a significant shortening of the course from the planned finish on Galtymore summit. Mark Ryan (Rathfarnham) on his mountain debut won the senior men’s race from Brian McMahon (Clonliffe). McMahon moved into the lead after a mile but Ryan emerged from the pack one kilometre later to join him. These pair pulled away from what was initially a large pack of around 20 runners. On the rough mountain path Ryan gradually pulled away for a good win. Sean Hehir (Rathfarnham) finished well for third ahead of Mick Kelly (Gowran), Tom Hogan (Slaneyside) and Peter O’Farrell (Rathfarnham).
Edel Mooney (Offaly) ran strongly to in the women’s race. Donna Mahon (Rathfarnham) had a very aggressive race throughout to finish a good second ahead of Mags Greenan (Clonliffe), Orla Ni Mhuircheartaigh (Galway) and Aoife Joyce (Crusaders).
Michelle Finn (Duhallow) and Eoin Rowan (North Sligo) won the junior races. The Jennings brothers (DSD) were second and third in the junior menahead of martin Doyle (Sliabh Bhuidhe). Eimear Tangney (Spa Muckross) and Gayle Finn (Duhallow) the medallists in the junior women. Breda McDonald (North Laois) ran very well to take fourth ahead of Becky Hand (Limerick) and Carol Huet (DSD).
