Mizuno Mile At Stormont

Linda Byrne wins, James Nolan second (AAI website) Lincoln’s MATT BOWSER ran the fastest ever mile time in the Province in a road race when he took the inaugural lucrative Mizuno Mile title at Stormont last night. Bowser’s winning time of 3 minutes 54 seconds was one second faster than Olympian James Nolan of UCD who in turn had 3 seconds to spare over surprise 3rd place finisher Gareth Hill of Ballymena. Abbeys Paul Pollock was 4th just ahead of English Schools 3000m champion Mitch Goose of Norwich.

Afterwards Bowser said he was very happy with his win particularly as 4 athletes were still in contention at the bottom of the steep Prince of Wales Drive with some 400m to the finish. The flat run to the finish was clearly to Bowser’s advantage as he used his recent classy 1500 metres form to good effect. Clearly his 4 track races over last weekend had produced no ill effects.

A somewhat overawed Hill was delighted to finish so close to 2 times Olympian Nolan. He said;”I am particularly pleased as I am just getting back to form after injury. I hope to get close to my 1500m PB time at Stafford this weekend”.

The result in the Ladies race was more clear cut with Dundrum’s Linda Byrne taking the title in 4 minutes 29 seconds, some 6 seconds ahead of fast finisher Kerry Harty of Newcastle. Harty did well to hold off Norwich’s Danni Nimmock with Finn Valley’s Catriona McGrenaghan finishing in 4th place. Former Irish Junior Cross Country champion Byrne said she was in good shape prior to the race as shown by a 4 minute 17 seconds PB over 1500m in Holland.

Byrne complimented the sponsors on providing good competition at an attractive venue. An attractive first prize of £750 was awarded to each male and female winner. With incentives like this the event should continue to attract quality entries in the future.
