Details have been just announced of the eagerly awaited 3rd Annual Mayo AC 5k Summer Series organised in association with Mayo Sports Partnership. This years series has been expanded to four races one in each of the four venues that Mayo AC currently operate a Fit4Life group they will take place on four Tuesday evenings at 8pm beginning in Castlebar on June 19th followed by Ballyhaunis June 26th Claremorris July3rd and finally Ballinrobe on july 10th where it will be followed by an end of series party.
As in previous years the organisers are anxious to point out that this a “no frills” fun event its open to all but the emphasis is on those who wish to run jog or walk at their own pace in a fun sociable environment. all courses are AAI measured well stewarded and there will be a time clock on the finish line. Spot prizes will be drawn among those who participate each week.
Each venue offers its own unique experience the Castlebar run will be held close to Lough Lannagh this year while Ballyhaunis takes place for the first time with start and finish close to the Rugby Club the third race in Claremorris will make history as it will be the first time in Ireland that a race will start outdoors and finish indoor as participants will cover the last 70 metres of an event indoor in the recently built Claremorris Community Recreational Centre beside Claremorris AC track while the last leg in Ballinrobe is held over what is considered one of the flattest courses in Ireland.
Due to health and safety concerns the series will be limited to approximately 300 participants the organisers point out that there is no guarantee that any entries can be taken on the evening of the events. To avoid disappointment people are urged to enter online as soon as possible on www.runireland.com the total cost of entry for the full series and post race party is very good value of €25.00.
Speaking recently Michael McGrath of Mayo AC wished all those planning to take part the very best of luck and urged people to enter online as soon as possible to avoid disappointment also pointing out that while” its very much a fun event it also offers people the opportunity to progress in the sport as has happened many people who took their” first steps” in previous years he also thanked Mayo Sports Partnership for their enthusiastic support of the series
Anne Ronayne, Community Sport Development Worker with Mayo Sports Partnership(www.mayosports.ie) said that;
‘Mayo Sports Partnership have been delighted to help develop this 5k series over the last number of years as a platform for all people in the community to become more physically active. We also have been very active in assisting the development of fit4life groups throughout Mayo. The fit4life ethos is to welcome walkers and joggers to weekly meet and train sessions to take part in recreational walking or jogging, leading to improved fitness and healthier living for the participants. Walking or jogging local events such as this 5k series can be a great opportunity for everyone to become more physically active with the main emphasis on recreational walking/jogging and fun. We would like to wish Mayo AC all the best with the 5k series and hope it is a huge success’
