Irish half marathon record holder Martin Fagan from Mullingar Harriers makes his competitive return to action this weekend in Sunday’s BUPA Great North Run half marathon in Newcastle after injury plagued his summer season.

Fagan, who set a new Irish half marathon record of 60 minutes 57 seconds in the Netherlands in March this year, will be part of an exceptional elite field in Newcastle that includes three time London Marathon winner Martin Lel of Kenya, 2008 Olympic Marathon silver medalist Jaouad Gharib of Morocco, 2009 World Cross Country champion Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia and Chema Martinez of Spain who finished 8th in the recent World Championships marathon.

The Great North Run is the world’s biggest half marathon with 54,000 participants.

In April this year, Fagan finished in third place in the Great Ireland Run in the Phoenix Park. He hopes to go two better in the Great Ireland Run on April 18th next year. Entries are already open online for the event at www.greatirelandrun.org
