
The Munster juvenile track and field championships at the Cork IT stadium over the weekend produced several new records, with three in particular worth a mention The boys U16 hammer was won by Adam King (Iveragh AC) with a throw of 69.56 to add over 4m to Gary Halpin’s 1981 record of 65.44m.
Alice Akers (Marian AC) won the U17 hammer with a throw of 52.01m to smash Mairead O’Neill’s 2010 record of 44.66m.
David Cussen (Old Abbey AC) cleared 2.01m to win the U17 high jump – his first time over 2m. His winning height added 11cm to Antoine Burke’s 1991 record, the second time this year he has broken one of Burke’s high jump records.
Laura McSweeney (Bandon AC) was in top form with two records. She won the U18 shot with a throw of 13.90m to better the 12.62m record of Patricia Walsh from 1976, and followed up with a throw of 48.91m to better the 47.89m record of Rachel Akers set in 2003.
Niamh Murphy (Blarney Inniscarra AC) won the U19 shot with a throw of 11.63m to better Fionnuala Lombard’s 2001 record of 11.13m.
