from Donore Harries website DCU Invitational and Weekend Round Up In the DCU invitational schools cross country meet held on Wednesday there was great performances by the brothers Van Haeften. In the Inter Boys Max ran an excellent race to finish 3rd and led his school, Salesian College home to a 3rd place team result also. Big brother Lee went one place further to get a fantastic 2nd place in the Senior Boys race and brought his team, also Salesian College, home in 1st place. Congratulations to them both.
Over the previous weekend Donore athletes were in action in a number of locations throughout the country. On Saturday some turned out for the BHAA races in Tymon park which was hosted by South Dublin County Council. In the ladies race held over 2 miles Mary McDermott, Karen McLoughlin, Susan Walsh, Ann Woodlock, Anna Mai Fitzsimmons and Mary Kelly all competed. Well done to them and also to the guys including George Brady, Fred Kiernan, Colin Moore and Tom Halton who ran the men’s 4 mile.
On Sunday the first Meet and Train cross country race of the new year was held in a wet and blustery Griffeen Park. A number of Donore’s Meet and Train Ladies took part in what was the second race of the Winter league 2008-2009. Well done to all who competed in the difficult weather conditions including: Sheelagh Sullivan 6th, Maura Kearns 8th, Cathy Shortt, Joan McTernan, Livia Ruiz, Catherine Murphy and Mary Murphy.
Also on Sunday Joe Rankin was in action in the National Masters Indoor Championships in Nenagh. While the wind and rain battered the roof throughout the day the athletes, officials and spectators were all in relative comfort in the fridge that is the Nenagh Olympic stadium. Joe competed in the men’s 3,000m and won a bronze in the over 55’s category. Well done Joe and hope it went some way to missing out on an over 55’s Gold Dublin medal in the previous week’s Dublin Masters Cross Country Championship due to a homemade error with his registration.
