Robert Heffernan had a very impressive performance in the men’s 20km walk today. He started off strong and led after 13km. A sudden quickening in pace left the Corkman out of the leading pack but he kept up a steady pace to finish in the top 10 in 8th place in a respectable time of 1 hour 20.36. Russian Valeriy Borchin won the Olympic gold medal in a time of 1 hour 19.01.
Joanne Cuddihy had a disappointing peformance in the women’s 400m when a knee injury she sustained meant that this has been her first race since June. Although she started off well her lack of race fitness began to show after the first 100m and she finished in 6th place in Heat 4 in a time of 53.32 seconds.
