The Aran Island of Inis Meain will host its annual 10k race this year on Saturday March 14. Celebrating its decennial anniversary (10 years), Inis Iron Meáin attracts hundreds of participants from all over the country for a weekend of fun, competitiveness and celebration. Importantly, it also helps to raise funds for the local secondary school, Colaiste Naomh Eoin, which is a vital link in establishing the sustainability and development of this small island community. This event caters for both top athletes and casual runners with three routes from which to choose (11K with beach, 10K and 5K), all of which take in a large part of the island, boasting spectacular views and variations in terrain – winding roadways, mixed elevation, sand dunes and beaches. Previous winners have included Sonia O’Sullivan. As has proven popular in recent years, participants can also enjoy St Patrick’s Weekend on the island – with the 17th of March being the only place and the only day of the year when the island’s traditional game of Cead is played. The 10k is timed for the earlier time of 12:30 pm this year and complementary refreshments are on offer before the race in addition to full buffet for all participants after the race. Celebrations will continue to the local that afternoon with a Six-Nations 2:30 pm kick-off with Ireland V Wales. The boat will depart at 4:30 pm and for those who are extending their visit for the weekend the festivities will continue that evening with entertainment provided by Enda & Louise all the way from Co. Tyrone. Entries for the event close on Friday March 13th at 12:00 midnight. The registration fee is €50 but to all those who register before January 31st participants a special rate of €30 is on offer. A unique event where the ‘craic’ keeps them coming back year after year! Enter now as entries are limited and places will fill quickly.
