Irish swimming success in Glasgow

Ireland had their most successful morning in the pool yet at the European Short Course Championships with Brendan Hyland and the Men’s 4x50m Medley Relay progressing to Finals and Danielle Hill and Shane Ryan securing semi-final places. Three Irish Senior Records were also broken on the last morning in Glasgow.

Butterfly specialist Brendan Hyland secured a place in his first ever senior international Final in the 200m event. The 25-year-old has shown good form this week, breaking the 400m Individual Medley Irish Record on Thursday, and was third in his heat swim this morning in 1:53.79 to progress in eighth place overall.

Ireland’s second relay to make a final this week came in the form of the Men’s 4x50m Medley with Conor Ferguson, Darragh Greene, Shane Ryan and Jordan Sloan combining for an Irish Record of 1:34.14. Ferguson led off with a personal best swim of 23.63 with the team taking a number of impressive scalps in taking the top-8 position.

Danielle Hill cemented her title as the fastest Irish woman ever in the pool with a new Irish Senior Record of 24.76 in the 50m Freestyle, the first time any female has broken 25 seconds. The 20-year-olds time was good enough to see her through to tonight’s semi-final too.

Shane Ryan will also be back in semi-final action this evening after comfortably qualifying out of the 50m Backstroke Heats. Ryan won his heat in 23.16 to advance in third place overall.

The top eight from the 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke semi-finals will progress to finals at the end of the evening session.

The morning finished with another Irish Senior Record from the Women’s 4x50m Medley relay of Danielle Hill, Niamh Coyne, Mona McSharry and Maria Godden. The quartet took over 4 seconds off the 2003 record of 1:53.95 for tenth place overall.

Also, in action, this morning, Niamh Coyne and Molly Mayne swam personal bests in the 200m Breaststroke clocking 2:25.55 and 2:29.46 respectively. Paddy Johnston (2:02.54) and Cillian Melly (1:58.60) ended their senior international debuts in the 200m Butterfly. McSharry touched in 25.50 in the 50m Freestyle while Conor Ferguson swam 23.93 in the 50m Backstroke.
