The Galway sprinter, who reached the semi-finals of the 200 metres at the Beijing Olympics, won the top award at ceremony which took place in the Crowne Palza Hotel in Santry.

The Athenry native will be looking to build on his performance in China at the World Championships in Berlin next year.

The other big winner was Eamonn Coghlan, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Coghlan, who won gold in the 5,000 metres at the World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, is the second person to receive the honour after inaugural entrant Ronnie Delaney last year.
