Griffin Disqualified from 50km walk at Worlds

Colin Griffin (Ballinamore AC) was disqualified from the 50km walk at the World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Griffin was placed in 31st position when he received his third red card. This is hugely disappointing for the Leitrim man who has committed himself to the extremely tough training for this grueling event including attitude training in Levino Italy in preparation for the championships.

Next in action for the Irish will be Deirdre Ryan (DSD AC) in the women’s high jump final at 11am Irish time following her tremendous performance in the qualification rounds. Her jump of 1.95m not only secured the Dundrum athlete a place in the final, it was also a new Irish record and the A qualification standard for the London Olympics.

At 11.15am Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) lines up in the 100m Hurdle semi-final. The Cork athlete will compete in the third of three semi-finals. The qualification standard is the first two plus two fastest losers.

An hour later her club-mate Ciaran O’Lionaird will line up in the men’s 1500m final. O’Lionaird ran a perfect technical race in the semi-final to secure a fastest loser spot into the final.
