Gorgeous Gort 4 Mile Road Race


South Galway Athletics Club launches the inaugural Gorgeous Gort Road Race. South Galway Athletics Club are delighted to announce that the inaugural Gorgeous Gort 4 mile road race will take place in Gort, Co Galway on Sunday February 19th, 2012 at 1:30pm. The event is suitable for walkers and runners of all fitness levels with over 200 competitors expected to attend.

The course consists of a 4 mile loop around Gort town and the surrounding countryside. The course is AI permitted and Jones Counter measured. The race headquarters will be the Gort community centre which is located at the top of the town on the left-hand side as you are travelling on the old N18 towards Ennis. Changing facilities will be provided here and refreshments will be provided afterwards.

Prizes will be presented to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Senior Man; the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Senior Woman; the 1st Man and Woman over 40; the 1st Man and Woman over 50; the 1st Man and Woman over 60 and the 1st Junior Man and Woman (aged 20 or under on day of race).

South Galway Athletics Club was set up in 2011 and this is their first run in Gort town. All funds raised will be used to develop the club. “Running is an inexpensive way to get fit, stay healthy and socialise. South Galway Athletics Club was set up to provide a network for experienced runners and a facility for beginners to get fit as part of a group” said Margaret Walsh, Race Director and Chairperson of the club, adding that, “We have a senior section as well as a Fit 4 Life section and the race will cater for all abilities. The aim is to encourage participation and provide people in the community with an opportunity to socialise in a healthy manner”. The club also has a juvenile section that trains athletes from the age of 8 to 18, the aim is to develop all athletic disciplines.
