The Woodie’s DIY AAI Indoor Games at Nenagh stadium today provided much needed competition for many of Ireland’s aspiring athletes. Healy pips Whelan in 60m at Woodie’s DIY AAI Games.
Joan Healy (Bandon AC), winner of the national junior title at the same venue last week, was back in action in the 60m and faced strong competition from Niamh Whelan (Ferrybank AC). The result was another good win for the Cork woman in a time of 7.71, with Whelan second in 7.73.
The two men’s 60m races were won by David Quilligan (Leevale AC) in
7.17 and Paul Whelan (Dublin Striders) in 7.15. Quilligan later won the long jump with a jump of 7.11m.
Mary McLoone (Tir Chonaill AC) won both jumps – the long with 5.47m and the triple with 11.78m.
Mark Hanrahan (Leevale AC) made most of the early running in the men’s 1,000m, but was overtaken by David McCarthy (Le Cheile AC) at the start of the last lap and he used his 400m speed to race away to win in 2:29.31, with Hanrahan second in 2:31.59.
Marian Heffernan (Togher AC) easily won the 400m in 56.51, but later had to fight hard to overcome Steffi Creaner (Celtic DCH AC) in the 200m. Heffernan won in 25.29 ahead of Creaner in 25.49.
Kate Veale (West Waterford AC) won the 3,000m walk in a time of 13:11.86, just one second outside her national record set in the Munster championships earlier this month.
