Fahy and WIT make statement of intent

Observers of the second annual Munster Universities Cross Country Championships at CIT bore witness to the increasing regional dominance of WIT’s men’s cross country squad. Jason Fahy (WIT) led from gun to tape over the 7km course with Andrew Connick, Brian McGinley and Patrick Flynn completing a clean sweep of the top four positions.

With six to score in the team competition Brian Gallagher and Gary Cantwell rounded out the scoring for WIT giving them an impressive 39 point advantage over nearest rivals UL, with hosts CIT completing the top three in the team event.

The addition of Michael Dowling, Paddy Hogan and Graham Power from last years bronze medal winning team surely indicates that the odds on DCU retaining their Intervarsity Cross Country title on March 12th are narrowing.

The Women’s 4km event also saw a dominant performance from UL’s Una Britton who had over a minute to spare at the finish line from UCC’s ever improving Aisling Moran. Britton led UL to team victory with WIT and CIT making up the minor places.

Considering the recent wet weather conditions the underfoot conditions at CIT were surprisingly good and the incorporation of a hill and an off campus field added an extra dimension to the course that now insures that the venue has something to offer to cross country runners of all types.
