from the AAI Next weekend’s National Throws Squad (December 8th in Tullamore) will be a major highlight on the coaching calendar. Hammer throwers and Javelin throwers will be delighted with the news that the Irish squads will be coached by none other than two former notable Olympians.

Szymon Zió?kowski (Sydney 2000 Olympic Hammer Champion) who has a personal best throw of 83.38m, will be taking the Hammer group over two action packed days. Day one will focus on Throwing technique and practical throwing sessions, while Day 2 (in Santry, Dublin) will focus on Strength and Conditioning for Hammer Throwing as well as more throwing practical sessions.

This is a top class opportunity for Irish coaches & throwers to benefit from the World class knowledge that has been developed in Polish throwing, a system that has produced numerous Olympic champions. Szymon Zió?kowski’s successful career has seen him win the European Junior Champships (1995), World Junior Championships (1994) as well as being IAAF World Champion (2001) and Olympic Champion (2000). Now at the age of 36, he reached another milestone by reaching another final in London Olympics 2012. What a career and what experience!

Javelin throwers, not to be left out are very lucky to have Terry McHugh (6-time Irish representative in Olympic Games). Terry holds the Irish Javelin record at 82.75m and still holds the World record for the most consecutive wins at a national championship – winning javelin at the Irish Championships for 21 years in a row from 1983 to 2004)

Terry has developed a very successful coaching stable from his base in Lucerne, Switzerland whereas national coach his throwers have been very fortunate to work under his very experienced eye. This has included producing the first Swiss javelin thrower to reach the European Championships final, over 82m. Terry trained for many years with former World record holder Steve Backley and other world class athletes. The developing Irish throwers will work with Terry for the full day on December 8th in Tullamore.

Attention Coaches!
If you are a Javelin or Hammer coach, this will be the best opportunity of the coming season to develop your skills under the above World Class coaches. This event is as much about the education of Irish Coaches as it is about improving our national squad athletes. All coaches are welcome to attend this event and all athletes are welcome to attend the coaching sessions to observe. Only selected national squad athletes may take part in the practical sessions.

Athletics Ireland Throw’s Coordinator David Sweeney has expressed his great appreciation to www.prosporteurope.com and ‘Polanik’ for helping arrange Szymon Zió?kowski’s visit from Poland and also to Terry McHugh for putting time into Irish throwing development.
