Dublin Simon 5 Mile Fun Run
Saturday 11th of October 2008

2008 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Annual Dublin Simon Fun Run and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Dublin Simon Fun Run is the longest running charity event in the Phoenix Park and this year we don’t only promise a great day out for runners of all levels, but we promise one of the best family days out of the year. We’ll have three separate races to cater for schools and individuals, and plenty of entertainment for those who prefer to take on the role of supporters. So what are you waiting for, get involved in one of the biggest charity Fun Runs of the year…

Fun Run Facts

The Fun Run was launched in 1983, making it the longest running charity event in the Phoenix Park.
It is a key annual fundraising event for Dublin Simon.
It is the largest charity organised running event in Ireland.
Last year, an estimated 2,000 people took part in the five mile event with hundreds of others simply attending on the day to support Dublin Simon.
Some 50% of the participants are school students.
More than €1m has been raised since the event began in 1983.
More than €100,000 was raised last year alone.
The event has attracted many celebrities, including Olympic Gold medal winner Ronnie Delaney, RTE’s Dustin the Turkey, Anna Nolan and Grainne Seoige. We are currently looking for a celebrity headliner for this year’s event and will let you know as soon as details are confirmed.
Date – Saturday 11th of October 2008
Time – 10.00 am
Location – Papal Cross, Phoenix Park

Information for Fun Runners

Your Fun Run Race Number:
Your Race Number will be posted out to you before the race (if you register the week prior to the Fun Run you will be able to collect it before the race). Please ensure that your Race Number is suited to your category and use the pins provided to attach it to your t-shirt – no pins below the perforated line.

Baggage:
There will be a baggage marquee set up in the triangle opposite the Papal Cross. If you wish to avail of this facility, please ensure that you arrive at it in plenty of time as it will get very busy before the start of the race.

Punctuality:
Punctuality is vital if the Fun Run is to be a success. The Fun Run is a professionally organised main road race and will start at 10.30 a.m. sharp! The U 7s will start at 9.45 a.m. and the 8-12 year old race will start at 10 a.m. sharp! We will be joined by RTE’s Karl Henry for a pre-event warm-up for the kids at 9.15 a.m. We recommend that entrants arrive one hour early to leave enough time to change, check in baggage and warm up.

Parking:
Parking will be located at the Phoenix Park Visitor’s Centre and along the main road on both sides from Parkgate Street to Castleknock Gate. There will be parking facilities available at the Papal Cross car park until full, which we anticipate will be by 9.00am. Please do not park on the route of the race or at the entrances to properties in the park. Please adhere to the restrictions on the day of the race. Dublin Simon Community will be held responsible for parking and failure to follow these instructions will jeopardise the future of the event.

Health & Safety:

All participants should warm up carefully before the start of the race. 15 minutes of gentle stretches are recommended before running.
Drink plenty of water before and after the race.
Wear proper running shoes.
Leave two and a half to three hours between eating and running.
Do not run if you have a temperature, feel ill or are on antibiotics.
Do not strain yourself; if you are gasping for breath, you are running too fast!
Walkers should be aware that when the main road re-opens at 10.00am they should move to the inside footpath if they are still on that section of the route.
A first aid ambulance and team will be available on the day.
T-shirts & Goody bags:
The first 3,000 people to register for the run will receive a t-shirt in their goody bag at the end of the Fun Run. If stocks run out and you do not receive your t-shirt, please check that your bag contains a voucher, which you can exchange for a t-shirt at the Dublin Simon shop on Camden Street.
