Donegal Juvenile, Novice and Masters Championships

Donegal Athletics Board All,

Please find attached the timetable for the forthcoming Donegal Cross Country Championships for Juveniles, Novice and Masters.

With a new venue in Castlefinn for the first time on October 7th for the Even Ages and Masters, and a return to the picturesque Fintra area of Killybegs on the 14th for the Uneven Ages and Novice (where the Ulsters will also be held), things are shaping up nicely for another quality County Cross Country Championships in 2012. Cross country is where many of our county’s stars took their first tentative steps leading eventually towards the international stage and no doubt, this will also be the path that many of our young juvenile athletes will aspire to and follow starting on Sunday 7th October in Castlefinn. Indeed, the prominence of Donegal athletes at both provincial and national level in recent years is testament to the strength of athletics in the county. With the majority of our athletes now returning after the summer break, new athletes trying out athletics for the first time, and quite a bit of interest from outside the county, this should lead to big numbers at both events.

The hugely successful road race series held over the past few months in Donegal has also brought a wealth of new adult talent to the local athletics scene in the county. With Fit4Life groups cropping up all over the county, nurtured, encouraged and developed by local clubs, many athletes have made the transition from the casual fitness side of running to an ability to run quality times for 5k’s and hopefully now step up to the competitive side of athletics both in cross country and track and field running. These Cross Country Championships provide a new challenge and a gap that athletes can fill between now and the start of the 2013 road running scene. The addition of a new crop of runners to a field of seasoned cross country runners should provide an interesting dynamic, a challenge, and hugely exciting races at both novice and masters levels. The County Board both encourages and welcomes athletes who have taken part in the road race series to now take part in our Cross Country Championships.

These Championships are also open to athletes from outside the county. Medals will be awarded to our County Champions (1st,2nd and 3rd) at both individual and team level, and medal recognition to individuals/teams from outside the county based on their overall finishing position e.g. Donegal A 1st, Outside 2nd, Donegal B 3rd, Outside 4th, Donegal C 5th – Donegal A gold, Outside silver, Donegal B silver and Donegal C bronze.

Further details will issue on changing, parking, etc for the venue in Castlefinn (the race course is across the road from the Castlefinn CPI centre on the Lifford side of Castlefinn).

Any queries, please give me a shout.
