Background to Pieta House

Pieta House, The Crisis Centre for Suicide and Self Harm officially opened its doors in Lucan, Co. Dublin in January 2006. Five years later, Pieta House have seen and helped over 4,000 people, has two outreach centres in Finglas and Tallaght, another dedicated centre in Ballyfermot in Dublin as well as a second national centre in Limerick.

Pieta House was founded by Joan Freeman, a practising psychologist who closed down her own counselling business eight years ago to dedicate her time to finding out how she could help people who were suicidal.
After three years of research, Joan opened up Pieta House in Lucan, Co. Dublin which quickly became a respected and recognised service for those who were suicidal. Having counselled many people in the past who were self-harming, Joan realised that this was a topic never discussed and rarely understood, and she decided to also help people with this debilitating issue.

Since opening, Pieta House has grown to almost 40 therapists and admin staff, and the demand for Pieta House services hasn’t let up. 95% of Pieta House income comes from fundraising events, the organisation rely heavily on the support and encouragement of their volunteers and friends of Pieta.  Our service is completely free of charge.
