from Munster Express website A tough course awaited the County Bee’s last Sunday in Aghavillier on what was a good day for running and for the Club. The Men’s Vets team took silver, led home by race winner Sean Caulfield, PJ O’Dwyer in 7th, Paschal Rochford and Bill Lacey bringing up the rear. In the juvenile girl’s races, the Lacey clan proved that if you want to be a good athlete you must choose your parents well. Hannah was 5th U/8, Eve a terrific 1st U/10 and Tara 3rd U/14 followed home by clubmate Claire McEvoy. In the Junior Ladies race Sarah Dollard whisked her way around to finish with the bronze medal.
On the boys front, it was again a family affair as Ciaran Wallis finished 3rd U/10 and Eoghan 5th U/14. Conor Rochford continued his great form of late and took gold in the Junior boys race.
Belfast International Stormont
The Irish ladies team were to the fore in the renowned International in Stormont last Saturday.
Deirdre Byrne, recent winner of the National Senior CC in Tramore narrowly missed out on another great win, finishing just 1s behind race winner Steff Twell of Great Britain. Rosemary Ryan also had a great run finishing 5th, just ahead of DSD’s Maria McCambridge.
The crack was 90 in Molum
If you were out walking on Christmas morning around Kilmacow you might have noticed an unlikely looking bunch of runners making their way around the village to and from Molum. Yet again Maggie’s Mad runners took to the road to celebrate the festive season the best way they know. In celebrating the birth of Christ a few more almost calved and gave birth themselves.
Whether it was the euphoria often said to follow a good run, or Maggie’s Powers, but son Bill Lacey swore, not only to run, but be inside the top 10 in next year’s senior CC if cousin Eoghan Gahan agreed to take part in the race.
Preparations are since underway to getLacey down to a fighting weight and branches of the Gowran, Paulstown and Thomastown Order of Malta have been pre-booked for next December just in case, with St.Luke’s on standby.
Next year should also see some lovely post-run scones and cakes from Sarah Dollard as Santa thought it about time that she ‘did a Darina’ on it, by leaving her a whisk, grater and mixing bowl under the tree.
After googling the items online to see what they were, Sarah expressed surprise at his choices but said she was up to the challenge. Check out local fairdays and fetes for the new Dollard Designed Delights.

Still nifty over 50
PJ O’Dwyer proved the benefit of running in from Maggie’s Christmas morning by following up with a great 0/50 win in the highly competitive Tony O’Connell 4 miler in Clonmel on St.Stephen’s Day in 23.41.
Always a great run to help get rid of the excesses of the day before and prepare for a few more, the race draws runners from Dublin, Cork, Kilkenny, Waterford and Laois to name but a few!
Overall winner on the day and retaining his title from last year was Sandis Bralitis in a time of 18.54, with KK County Senior winner Brian Maher of KCH taking 3rd spot.
Seamie Murphy also of KCH took gold in the 0/45 category with a fine run of 22.07. Narrowly missing out on 3rd place in the senior ladies race was Mary Doolin of St.Joseph’s, just beaten by, a returning to top-form, Diane Behan. Well done to all Kilkenny athletes on the day.
Wellie Race Best Ever
The annual Castlecomer Wellie race took place again this year on New Year’s Day and is on track for making a massive €40,000 for local charities. Travelling up home for the day from the South East was Mary ‘Booties’ Burke of Waterford AC. Mary was narrowly beaten last year and determined to prove her well-ability this time round by winning the ladies race. Commenting on her win, she said this year’s floods around Tramore late last summer helped her preparation enormously, as her running in wellies during this time provoked less smart remarks than normal.
She hoped others would take up the challenge, pointing out that in this time of recession and watching the pennies, wellies are cheaper than the hi-tech pronation-correcting super-cushioning Nike or Asics runners. They are also easier to clean and need no lacing up. Something to think about.
Road Runners back on track
