Secondary schools and youth clubs all over Cork city and county are being invited to sign up teams to enter the 2014 Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge.

Last year, the first year of the Youth Challenge, more than 100 youth teams took part in the 26.2 mile marathon relay challenge, and this year it is hoped that even more schools and youth clubs will join in the fun.

“The Youth Challenge is specially designed for our young people; it’s about getting involved and making the year count for something special”, said Lord Mayor of Cork Catherine Clancy. “Participants can walk, jog or run the Youth Challenge relay – it’s about taking part, having fun, keeping fit and enjoying the unique excitement and buzz on marathon day.”

Cork Education and Training Board , Cork Sports Partnership and the City and County Councils are calling on young people aged between 16 and 18 years old to sign up now for the Cork City Marathon Youth Challenge, which will take place on Bank Holiday, Monday, 2nd June 2014.

The Youth Challenge is a team relay of 5 persons, each completing a stage of the marathon, with a maximum distance of 5.8 miles (9.3km). Training for this non-competitive relay can take just 13 weeks, but early sign-up of teams is vital.

“Being part of a team is something special, whether it’s in school, sport or work. As a team relay, the Youth Challenge is a fun, engaging team experience that shows character and commitment”, said Cork County Mayor Noel O’Connor.

Now in its eighth year, the Cork City Marathon is an internationally recognised marathon, with certification from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). One of the fastest courses in Ireland, the Cork Marathon has been praised for its inclusivity, ensuring that young and old and those with varying degrees of challenges are included in the marathon.

Ted Owens, CEO of the Education and Training Board, said “it will be a unique experience and I encourage all Principals and PE teachers to encourage their students to take part“.

To enter the Youth Challenge, schools, youth clubs and groups should apply now by contacting Eucharia Savage, Cork City Council, by email [email protected] or [email protected] or visit www.corkcitymarathon.ie
