Some updates on preparations for 2nd June. Starting time
The Marathon and Team Relay begin at 9am, Monday 2nd June, on Patrick’s Street.
Course time limit is 7 hours.
Course

The final measuring of the course is almost complete. Two minor changes to the 2007 route: this year the race won’t go out as far as the Poulavone Roundabout (Ballincollig) but will turn off to the right on Model Farm Road at Old Church Road (by Nagles Nursery). This road, which has a short sharp hill, will bring you back down to the west end of the Carrigrohane Road. The change was made to relieve traffic congestion in the west of the city. The extra mileage needed was found back at the Lough, where the race will now run up the Lough Road and round a half-circuit of the Lough.

Registration

Registration will take place from 10am–6pm on Saturday (31st May) and Sunday (1st June) at Cork City Hall.
All marathon participants and at least one representative of each team must register to pick up their race number and goodie bag (this year, we really can call it a ‘goodie’ bag!).

Energy Drink

We’re delighted to welcome Gatorade as the official Sports Energy Drinks supplier. You’ll find Gatorade in your goodie bag at registration and they’ll have three sampling tables around the course (details soon).

Relay Changeover Points

We were hoping to reorganise the relay changeovers so that the third point would be at the exact halfway mark. This is proving more difficult than we had imagined. As things stand, the relay points are in the same position as for the 2007 race (further information available online).
As in 2007, we’ll have shuttle buses to take relay team members to their changeover points. The hub will be at City Hall. Full details closer to race day.

Confirmation of entry and race number

We’re currently clearing a backlog of receipts and notification of race numbers. If you’ve entered recently and haven’t received your confirmation yet, please be patient – we should have it out to you next week.
If you’ve entered online and did not receive confirmation from either Active Europe (email) or ourselves (letter), please email [email protected] and let us know.

Training

Read Mick Dooley’s guide to preparing for the marathon every Wednesday in the Evening Echo. Each week deals with a different aspect of preparing for June 2nd. A summary of the articles will be available next week on the ‘training’ section of our website.

Training in the Munster area? Don’t forget that the Quality Hotels ‘Stride by the Tide’ takes place at Redbarn on Tues. 29th April. Further information available from Noel Curtin at 024-95483. That’s followed on Thurs. 31st by the Midleton ‘5’.

If you haven’t entered yet, this weekend is your last chance to register for Bay Run 08 Half Marathon. They’ve extended the deadline for registration until the 20th of April. **You can register through their website www.bayrun.ie. Bay Run 08 is the ideal preparation for the Cork City Marathon one month before your marathon allowing you to test yourself over the scenic course in West Cork on May 4th 2008. Bay Run is now in its third year and uses the Champion Chip timing system which will give an accurate time breakdown for your half marathon. Preparations are well under way and the Bay Run organisers are expecting a big turn out for Bay Run 08 – they look forward to seeing you at the start line in May. Should you have any queries, information can be found on the website www.bayrun.ie alternatively send an email to [email protected].

For now, best wishes and safe training
