Connacht Metric League

Competition proposal for the 2012 season – track athletics This Proposal is about setting up a competitive programme to encourage middle-distance racing in the regions. The provision is not for “one-off” races as a means to itself, but a series of highly competitive outings with incremental incentives, the purpose thus being is to run as fast as possible over the middle-distances.

Connacht Metric League 2012
The idea for the Connacht Metric League is to establish a series of races over the 800m, 1500m, Mile and 3000m which are competitive and fast.  The league is to be open for all athletes, male and female, junior, senior and masters.   The league will be spread between the counties of Connacht and each race is scored for the fastest time of the day, then overall.
Day 1
1 Mile.  Male and Female races
Day 2
800m, 1500m, 3000m Male and Female races
Day 3
800m, 1500m, 3000m Male and Female races
Day 4
800m, 1500m, 3000m Male and Female races
Day 5
1 Mile. Male and Female races.
Each athlete in order to score full points need to race in 800m, 1500m and 3000m respectively  as well as in the Mile races. Scores are calculated as below:
1. Highest score achieved – i.e fastest time over every distance.
2. Fastest in each distance
3. Best improvement in the Mile (Difference between Day 1 and Day 5).
This League would then select the three best athletes in each section to compete in an inter-regional meet (so the Metric League would include a similar league such as the Dublin meets, in each region so Leinster, Munster and Ulster as well as Connacht).
The Winners then (or the fastest times from the leagues – whichever is the fastest) is selected and invited to compete in competitive races in European and BMC races.

The league should then take place between April and May, with the progression towards competing in June to July in the European/BMC meets.
