Race update Preparations are well underway for the first Clew Bay half marathon taking place in Louisburgh on August 6th 2011. The course has been officially measured and certified to Athletic Association of Ireland (AAI) standards. Application is well progressed to have the event officially approved by the AAI. The route starts at the GAA clubhouse in Cahir, Louisburgh and takes the runners initially out the Leenane road to Cregganbaun. From there, the route turns right and westwards to Killeen Church. From Killeen the route turns right again, bringing the runners back again to Louisburgh and the finish line in Cahir.
The route was chosen to be as flat as possible in the local terrain. As a result the route climbs slowly in the first third of the route and then is predominately flat or down hill for the remainder of the route.
Organisers are hopeful for a good turnout for the first running of the race. Committee member Michael O Grady said “Interest has been strong with local athletes and as well as regular visitors to the area. We hope that it will bring a lot of people to the area to enjoy not only the race but the beaches, mountains and Summer atmosphere of Louisburgh".
