Mark Christie (Mullingar Harriers) ran a confident race to finish fifth in the 5,000m at the Payton Jordan Candinal Invitational in Stanford California last night. Brandon Bethke (Quicksilver) pulled clear in the closing stages to win in 13:25.82, with Christie clocking 13:28.21 to slice a massive nine seconds off his previous best of 13:37.36 – achieved in this race twelve months ago.
His time is just outside the B standard of 13:27 for the World championships. Alistair Cragg (Clonliffe Harriers) held a prominent position for much of the race before being out paced on the last lap to finish eight in 13:30.21. He dropped out of the Boston marathon after developing a massive blister on his foot.

At the Brown Springtime meet David McCarthy (West Waterford AC) was a runaway winner of the 1,500m in a time of 3:43.66. Earlier in the week he anchored Providence College in the DMR at Penn Relays with a 4:01.25 mile time
