Sponsored by Fota Wildlife Park and organised by Eagle AC, the Cheetah Run will take place at 8pm on Thursday May 20th 2010 in Fota Wildlife Park, Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork.
The 4 mile course will be held on private roads in Fota Estate, largely off the public roads. The first event, held in 2009, attracted 662 runners.
Starting inside Fota Wildlife Park, the race takes in much of the Wildlife Park during the first mile. After approx. 0.5 miles, the race enters the Public Works area of the island, and passes by the Scouting Ireland campsite before continuing on past Fota House and gardens and exiting onto the main Cork-Cobh road, at about 1.25 miles. The public road section comprises a mere 287 metres, following which the race turns left, back into the Fota Estate, rejoining the Public Works road about 200 metres west of Fota House, completing a loop of about one mile. Passing back along the Public Works road and back into Fota Wildlife Park at the railway station entrance to the park.
Once back in the Wildlife Park, the race turns left at the restaurant and heads back towards the main entrance. Near the entrance, the route turns right, past the Giraffe enclosure and on past the Cheetah enclosures, down the hill past the Sea Eagles, on the left, the Seals, on the right and the Gibbon Island, on the right. The finish is at the lower part of the Wildlife Park, about 200m from the Restaurant.
50% of the race proceeds will go towards renovating the Park’s Lar Gibbon Island, so the last quarter mile should prove to be ‘different’ to most races, with the residents of Gibbon Island screeching their appreciation and acclamation for the efforts and generocity of the race participants!
