from Athletics Northern Ireland Five hundred people are expected to take to the streets to participate in the first George Best Belfast City Airport 5 mile road race on Sunday 20th May.
The race, in memory of the late athlete Les Jones, has received significant funding from the airport’s Community Fund and is being organised by governing body Athletics Northern Ireland.
It will begin and finish in Victoria Park but not before runners take on the fast flat course through East Belfast.
Over one mile will be on public roads, including Connswater Walkway, Mersey Street, Connsbrook Avenue and Larkfield Road.
Adam Newton, a DUP Councillor for East Belfast, said:
“This is a great opportunity for people to take part in a fun, but worthwhile, event. There is a strong sense of community in this area so it is great that hundreds of people can get involved, either running or coming out and supporting those taking part. I am delighted the airport has provided funding for such a great community event in East Belfast”
Andrew Muir, an Alliance Councillor for North Down, said:
“As a keen runner myself, I will be taking part in the race and I’m delighted the airport is backing it. It will be a fun day and I hope everyone comes and supports all the runners.”
Michelle Hatfield, Corporate Responsibility Director at Belfast City Airport, said:
“We are thrilled to be able to support this project through our Community Fund. The airport continually strives to help projects that benefit people in the local area. What a better way than to race through the streets for a good cause!”
David Seaton, Chairman of Athletics NI, said:
"Athletics Northern Ireland is very pleased that, thanks to the generosity of Belfast City Airport, we are able to promote another major road race in this Olympic year. Among the local athletics fraternity there is currently an appetite for this type of event so the fast flat course chosen should provide an opportunity for personal bests at all levels."
All the participants will receive a Belfast City Airport drawstring bag and a T- shirt.
Entries close on Friday 11th May and the race is limited to 500 people.
