The buzz around Irish athletics is truly palpable right now with the Irish Life Health National Senior Track and Field Championships coming up in Morton Stadium next week (July 28th/29th).
Phil Healy (Bandon), who broke the national senior 200m record at the Cork City Sports, was on hand alongside Thomas Barr (Ferrybank) to launch the Irish Life Health National championships.
Healy has been in scintillating form this year setting a new national 100m record of 11.28 seconds earlier this summer. The Bandon bullet will be competing in the 200m at the nationals to secure her place for the European Athletics Championships in Berlin this August.
Barr will be chasing his 8th consecutive National Senior title at this year’s championships. The Ferrybank star is getting into excellent shape and ran a 200m personal best of 21.16 at the Cork City Sports showing his top end speed is better than it’s ever been.
A number of Ireland’s best athletes will be on show including Mark English (UCD), Ciara Mageean (UCD) and Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley) who recently won a silver medal in the high jump at the IAAF World U20 Championships. The action will be aired live on RTE 2 on the Sunday (July 28th).
